Start of obedience classes

Selasa, 07 Juni 2016

Dog training often ends up looking more akin to human training. Thats really because an owner must train himself, before he can effectively attempt to train his dog. People are not born knowing how to train a dog and need to first learn if they really desire to do so. This article will help to clear up some of the mystery of dog training.

One of the ways to make a dog more easy to train is to have the dog fixed at six months. This should go hand in hand with the start of obedience classes. A newly neutered or spayed dog is more obedient. You will be able to better enjoy the time you have with your dog and they will be happy and healthy.

Clickers are a great way to reinforce good behavior from your dog. If you give your dog an award when you used the clicker, it will be easier to train. Attempt to click and treat immediately and do this several times for a few days. Over time, your dog will learn that the clicking noise means he is doing something correctly.

Always give your puppy plenty of toys to chew on to help with teething pain. Otherwise, you might find your shoes becoming chew toys. Take it away, and give him a chew toy. If painful teething is the problem, let the puppy chew on a wet washcloth that has been frozen.

If you have a puppy that likes to chew on everything when you are away from home, the easiest solution is to consider an indoor or outdoor kennel to use in your absence. If you cant put him outside due to regulations or weather, use dog gates to make certain rooms inaccessible, and put valuables in high places.

You should always walk your dog before leaving your house for long periods of time. Wearing him out may minimize his anxiety at being separated from you.

A variety of rewards, such as treats, praise and toys keep your dog interested in pleasing you. Rewarding your dog with special treats during training will encourage him to obey the commands you give him. He will begin to look forward to your training sessions.

Training should be seen as fun time to your dog. Keep training sessions to more than 10 to 15 minutes to stay within your dogs attention span. Give plenty of rewards. Give your dog a lot of praise when they do something right. When the dog enjoys their training, they will listen better.

Dont bog your puppy down with more information than he can process. Puppies do not have a very long attention span and limited energy, keep it brief and positive. Overdoing it could cause them to forget what was learned, and they may see the training as negative; thus, making sessions harder for you later.

Make sure your dog understands the difference between right and wrong. Everyone who lives with your dog will have to undertake the same behavior for him to learn from your training. It can quickly make your efforts backfire!

Use the dogs name as much as you can to make sure it pays attention. Make sure to use the dogs name constantly when you first have him, so he can make the connection with his name and paying attention. Put some thought into your dogs name, and choose one that isnt too long and that isnt too similar to other common words.

Something you could do is put a toy in the dogs mouth and keep it there. Start by using a clicker and treating him every time he picks up a toy in his mouth. Wait until the dog has the toy in his mouth. After using the clicker, reward him with a treat. It is important to only reward him again if he picks up the toy with his mouth on his own.

Do not let your own mood influence how you treat your dog. Start the training session with good feelings and expectations. Only correct your dog after he has done something you dont want him to.

Dogs often chew because they are dealing with anxiety. In order to keep your dog as safe as possible while you are away, he should be kept in a dog crate. Giving him a chew toy while in the crate is also a good idea to keep him busy.

A clicker can be a useful tool for positive reinforcement. When you begin using a clicker, positively associate the clicker noise with positive reinforcement. Try clicking and treating immediately, and doing this several times over a few days. Soon your dog will be able to recognize the click noise means that he did something good, helping to shape desirable behavior.

When potty training your dog, stay away from wee-wee pads. These pads can leak, leaving behind invisible areas with the scent and enzymes from feces and urine that will attract your puppy back to the spot. Wee-wee pads also lead dogs to believe that anything in a similar shape is fine to use as an indoor bathroom. It is important that you teach your dog that the great outdoors is their potty.

A new dog requires teaching proper obedience training right from the beginning. It is much easier to get a dog to learn the right way rather than making it unlearn its bad habits. If you never give your dog any scraps from table food, they will never start begging for it.

When dog training, assign a particular word or action to each behavior. Dogs respond well to this because it helps them to understand what you are looking for from them when you speak a certain way. The best tip is to stay consistent. Consistent commands will help make your training successful.

If you are welcoming a guest into your home, give them clear instructions about how to interact with your dog. Keeping calm, and introducing themselves to your dog, may help reduce any negative behaviors that another approach would cause.

Whenever you want your dogs attention, use its name. You will not be able to control your dog if you do not get his attention first. Practice calling your dogs name and letting him respond at least tens times a day. Also, it is very inappropriate for you to call the dog over to you and then punish him, as this will teach him to fear you and discourage him from coming when called.

When you get your puppy, be sure to create a bond to him by helping him learn his name. Repeat his name regularly, so he will learn to come to you when he hears it. These should be the primary words your dog needs to learn. Spending a lot of time interacting and playing with your puppy is the best way to establish a bond of love and trust. This will make him easier to train later.

After learning some helpful hints on how to get through to your dog and train it to behave to your expectations you simply need to follow what you have learned. After changing your dogs behavior to fit with the tips suggested you can properly train your dog.

Pekoe A Service Dog in Trouble

In honor of International Assistance Dog Week, I want to tell you about a very special dog and his person.
Pekoe is a 6-year old black Standard Poodle with bright brown eyes and soft fur. His person, Vince, is a quadriplegic after an accident 16 years ago.  I met Vince and Pekoe a few weeks ago when Vince contacted me about some behaviors Pekoe was exhibiting.  I learned a lot about their relationshp, how it started, what Pekoes favorite things are (food, food, and food), about Vinces accident, and also that Vince used to be an NFL and CFL football player back in the day.  He played for the Packers, and I told him I was a Vikings fan - thankfully he didnt fire me!  Vinces incredible attitude and humor, despite his circumstances, inspire me, and his love for his dog is unwavering, just like anybody else who adores his dog.
Pekoe
Its not uncommon for service dogs to become protective of their humans.  Being responsible for someone, like Pekoe is, can be very stressful and the job comes with a lot of pressure.  About 2 years ago, Pekoe started become reactive when he saw another dog.  For whatever reason, he deemed dogs a threat to himself and Vince, to the point where Vince had to stop taking him with him when he went out.  Unfortunately, not being able to take your service dog with you when you are quadriplegic can be heartbreaking.  Not to mention, Pekoe is Vinces constant companion and they are two peas in a pod!
Pekoe and Vince
When Vince first contacted me, I wasnt sure if I could take on his case. I had never worked with a service dog before and had no experience with working dogs in this situation. But Vince was very convincing and I truly wanted to help him.  So, I contacted my colleague, Jennifer Arnold, at Canine Assistants in Atlanta. She spent an hour with me on the phone explaining the nuances of dogs with wheelchairs and how service dogs handle stress. She gave me a thousand bits of advice to try, and it was all extremely helpful. After we spoke, I thought about it for a day or two, and ultimately realized that Pekoe is actually just like any other anxious dog Ive worked with. He just needed to decompress and have some fun again.
I decided that we would go back to basics and let Pekoe just be a dog for a while.  While I have been trying different reward systems on Vinces chair (he cant deliver treats), I have been experimenting with Pekoes commands, getting him to pay attention to Vince when hes distracted, and adjusting the way he works with Vinces wheelchair.  Vince can move pretty quickly in that thing!  It is very important that I use only positive reinforcement with Pekoe as he is already stressed enough.  No prong collar, leash jerks, or punishment for him- only love, praise, food, and allowing him to make choices.
Yesterday was our 6th session and already, Pekoe is less stressed and wants to work.  I introduced him to Rufus, my fake stuff Rottweiler from a far distance and he offered me lots of fun behaviors that we have been working on.  While Rufus doesnt move, seeing him was stressful, but Pekoe learned very quickly that Rufus is a predictor of really good things and this process will continue to help him learn he doesnt have to protect Vince anymore.
Soon I will introduce him to my dog, Paisley, and then go on a few field trips.  I am sincerely hoping I can get him back to the point where Pekoe can be a service dog again, as I think he truly enjoys it. I know Pekoe needs Vince, and Vince needs Pekoe-they make a great team. You know whats really cool, though?  They think I am teaching them... but in reality, they are really teaching me.
Vince, Me, and Pekoe!

Make sure to remain patient during these times and do not get frustrated. The sooner you being training your Pit, the greater. At 2 months old, start basic training and socializing your Pit Bull puppy. Remember, ensure that you keep the training activities fun and employ positive reinforcements to encourage desired behavior.

Socialization is among the key regions of focus for Pit Bull training. Pits can be hugely friendly and affectionate animals however they could be dog aggressive otherwise properly socialized. The easiest method to socialize your dog would be to sign up for training classes. Training classes let your Pit to become trained alongside along with other dogs.

Whenever your Pit Bull puppy reaches age 13-16 weeks, start a far more serious training routine. In this age, your Pit will probably test his boundries along with you and explore the region of dominance. He might nip and then try to assume the alpha dog role. You should be strong during this period and gaze after the dominant role within the relationship.

IAABC Conference

The Wag & Train crew are all back from Rhode Island where we attended the IAABC Conference.  It was an exciting line-up!  We learned lots of valuable information about cats and dogs and met Victoria Stillwell, too- one of the greatest highlights of my career.  We also met up with Dr. Dodman again and bugged him for another photo op.
Steve Dale, Brenda Aloff, and Bob Bailey were also there, among others.  We also enjoyed the East Coast seafood with our fair share of oysters and lobsters...yum!

Hackles does NOT mean aggression

We get asked about dogs hackles ALOT in training. Most people believe it is because there dog is being aggressive- and that is not so!

Hackles are an involuntary body function called Piloerection. Dogs get piloerection when they are in a state of arousal/when there is an adrenaline rush.

Piloerection can be caused by excitement, stimulation, arousal, being startled, fear or interest.

This is a great article~ make sure you have a read so you have a better understanding of your dog!

Why Do Dogs Have Hackles?

By Ruthie Bently

All dogs have hackles and they run from the dog’s neck, down their backbone and to the base of their tail, sometimes even the shoulders. One of my dogs actually had hackles that started at the base of their skull and went all the way down their back and partway down their tail. The first time Smokey saw horses, he sniffed the air in their direction and his hackles rose to their full extent on his back. He didn’t bark or growl at the horses as he approached them and he didn’t race up to them, so why did his hackles rise? Put it down to a simple case of curiosity. Smokey saw these huge creatures who smelled funny to him, and he was trying to assess the situation before taking action. Since I wasn’t worried, neither was he.

When a dog’s hackles rise it is called piloerection. It is similar to the hair going up on your arm, your head or the back of your neck and is an involuntary reaction to a situation. It is theorized that piloerection happens when there is a rush of adrenaline through a dog’s system. Hackles may rise on a dog’s entire body or just in one area, depending on the situation. This should not be confused with a Rhodesian Ridgeback’s ridge. This is a particular feature indicative of the breed and even some Ridgeback crosses.

Piloerection can be caused by excitement, stimulation, arousal, being startled, fear or interest. It is rare that hackles are raised in an aggressive manner, though it does happen. A hunting dog’s hackles may rise when they are pointing a bird or catch a whiff of a pheasant in the brush; they are stimulated and react accordingly. An intact male dog scenting a female in heat in the neighborhood may raise his hackles in his arousal. A dog’s hackles can rise involuntarily due to a loud clap of thunder that startles them. Even the excitement of greeting a family member or canine friend can cause the hackles on a dog’s back to rise.

Small dog or dogs that are fearful may raise their hackles when they meet another dog and it is thought they do this to try and make themselves look taller to the approaching dog. It reminds me of what my cats did when I brought my first puppy home. They puffed themselves up and looked so huge the puppy backed up in terror. While it was funny to watch, I had my hands full trying to calm the poor puppy and soothe the cats. A dog smelling an unfamiliar wild animal in their territory at night may raise their hackles and growl a warning to “stay away.” A puppy raising its hackles may do so because it is unsure how to react to a situation or change in its surroundings.

The best thing for a responsible pet owner to do is to be aware of your own dog’s body language and be in charge of any situation you and your dog are in. The next time you go walking with your dog or to the dog park, watch your dog and how they react to other dogs they meet. Watch both the dogs and their communication with each other. Watch not only their hackles, but their tail, eyes, ears, body posture and facial expressions. For more helpful tips on this topic, read Linda Cole’s Body Language of Dogs. By understanding your own dog and their body language, you are a step ahead of the game.

Successful Methods Train Your Dog

Part of the responsibility of pet ownership includes making sure your dog is well-trained. Training a dog is a long process that will require you to learn a lot about canine behavior. Ahead you will find some tips for getting the most from your dog training efforts.

Always give your dog the tools for success. If you are training it to stop chewing things it shouldnt be chewing on, give it things that it can chew on. It is also important that a dog who chews is protected from danger. Common household items like nylons and hairbrushes pose a grave threat to your dog and can cause him to choke.

When you are working on crate training with your dog or puppy small steps is what works best for them to get used to it. When they seem comfortable in it with the door open, try shutting the gate and feed them treats through the wires. At first, leave the dog enclosed in the crate for only short periods of time, such as 10 seconds, and then gradually increase the duration. If the puppy gets too upset then you increased the time too much, too fast.

Consider using a clicker to help your dog learn great behavior. If you give your dog an award when you used the clicker, it will be easier to train. Making the sound and giving a treat is a good way to build this association. Eventually, your dog will learn that the noise means "good," and this will help shape their behavior by using this tool.

Do not neglect to make a visit to the vet for a spay or neuter around the six month mark. This should be done at the same time you start obedience training. A spayed or neutered dog is a better pet and a more attentive obedience student. You and your pet will enjoy a longer and happier life together.

If your dog suddenly starts exhibiting behavioral problems, take him to a veterinarian in order to rule out any serious health conditions. Animals that are in pain or that have certain health conditions may lash out or behave inappropriately. This behavior is an indicator to humans that there is something wrong.

When training your dog, you should always make sure you use the same word or action for each individual behavior. You dog will learn to respond to the specific word or words that you choose to represent a desired behavior. Consistency is key. It ensures that the dog will respond properly to commands.

Train your dog on a regular basis to make sure he understands the rules of the house. Too many owners tend to be under the impression that once they have trained their dog, thats the end of it. But pets and humans actually share the same types of habit learning systems; if they dont practice they will forget! Therefore, it is vital that your dog follows an established rule system at all times.

Destructive chewing is often a result of anxiety. Putting your dog in his crate with a chew toy will reduce the chance of destructive events and give him something to do while he waits for you.

Communication is one of the essential aspects of training your dog. During your dogs training sessions, keep your signals and commands clear and consistent. The signals you send to your dog include not only rewards and corrections but also your tone of voice and your body language. Remember to always pay attention to the communication signals from your dog. Your dog can let you know how hes feeling, like if hes having a bad day or is worn out.

Teach your dog the difference between right and wrong. You will need help from everyone in the family to teach this. It can quickly undermine your efforts.

If you have a knock-down, drag-out fight with your kids or reprimand another pet, your voice could impact your dogs training. Remember: if your dog has not done something wrong immediately beforehand, your interactions should always be positive.

Do not give your dog any punishments when you are in the process of training. If your dog does not follow the correct behavior, instead of punishing him, gently teach him what to do instead. Training your dog is a great way to develop a positive relationship with him.

Determine in advance what types of food your dog likes so that you can use it in the training process. Your dog will be more likely to respond to your training efforts when the food reward is something he likes. Pay close attention to his response after you offer a reward.

To house train your dog, you should make sure that your dog follows a regular feeding and elimination schedule. This can train your dog to whine or come get you when he feels the urge, so you can let him out and prevent him from doing his business inside. Having a set schedule will teach your dog how to wait until he can go outside for the next potty break.

If you teach your dog the right way to act at the beginning you will have a good dog. It is much more difficult to break a dogs bad habits, than to teach it correct behavior in the beginning. For example, if you are adamant about your dog not being a beggar, then never make any exceptions to handing him food from your table.

Its important to include your family when training your dog. The house rules and specific expectations will be more apparent to the new dog if everyone, not just the primary trainer, follows the same training procedures.

Continuously maintain all training that you have done with your dog, and consider adding new behaviors as you go. Do not believe that just because you dog has graduated from obedience school that training is complete. However, pets are ruled by habits, structure and routine in much that same way that humans are. Its important to be consistent with the rules for your dog.

Communication is one of the essential aspects of training your dog. Make sure you are clear and consistent when you are working with your dog. This means to be consistent not only with words, but with corrections and rewards. Be well aware that your dog is telling you something too. They will inform you of whether or not they are overworked, anxious, or having a great day.

You can prevent your dog from destroying your home by keeping it outdoors when you are away from the house. When this isnt possible, you want to provide things that both appeal to your dog and that are okay for the dog to chew on. Establishing acceptable chews toys is also about keeping those things you do not want your dog to chew up behind closed doors or well out out of reach.

Hopefully the tips we have given will ensure that you, as well as others, enjoy your dog and his company. Training your dog makes ownership a rewarding experience. No matter if you choose to attempt your own dog training or you enlist the aid of a professional, making sure your pet is fully trained is a great way to ensure the happiness of you and your companion..

Clicker Dog training

Sabtu, 04 Juni 2016

Should you be looking to coach your pet you may think about using the clicker training method, that has recently gain popularity amongst trainers from coast to coast. Within this method the trainer needs to utilize a clicker, a little plastic box having a metal button making a unique click sound when the button continues to be pressed. The training technique is easy and is within many different ways parallel towards the positive training method. Heres what you need to do. Choose a particular behavior that you wish to teach or reinforce your pet to complete. Numerous behaviors/actions come naturally towards the dog like sitting, eating, standing, barking etc. which need simply to be reinforced which means that your dog knows when you wish him to complete what. Many other actions like acting dead, shaking hands, allowing this to continue etc. are not equipped naturally towards the dog and want to become taught. Clicker training may be used to do both.

Clicker training works based on the basics of operant conditioning, by associating the noise of the clicker having a food that the dog particularly likes. Now all youve got to complete is make use of the clicker to command your dog to behave, your dog, considering the fact that he associates the noise of the clicker using the food, immediately obliges and the training is complete.

Lets take a good example as one example of the technique better, suppose you need to teach your pet to sit down, you place a cookie in your dogs nose playfully after which move it upwards, your dog will obviously stick to the movement from the biscuit using its nose and can then naturally rest its posterior on the ground, thereby putting himself inside a sitting position. Now time your clicking to become so accurate regarding occur right as the dog seats himself, now provide him the biscuit and praise him. Continue this for sometime till your dog starts to associate the press using the food before click makes him sit without you luring him with treats. Now teach him another behavior, but dont forget to add the press cue only one time your pet himself provides you with the behaviour otherwise the press wont be attached to anything within the dogs head and that he is going to be confused regarding what it really means.

Your pet is a smart little animal and it is time you gave him due credit for your. Numerous trainers happen to be recognized to use negative reinforcement techniques alongside the clicker method but this simply fails because punishment all the time results in a quantity of unwanted behavior even when it serves the main reason for teaching your dog not to make a move temporarily.

Any type of training is really a strenuous and rigorous process and requires some perserverance. Although clicker training method includes a high rate of success may possibly not work with certain kinds of dogs, you may notice its no longer working for the pet youd be strongly advised to make use of another way to train it to say tricks.
